U. S. ENFORCEMENT OFFICER WOULD ARREST CUSTOMERS AS WELL AS SELLERS.
The convivial flask that bulges many a masculine hip pocket has become the object of attack by Federal Prohibition Director Fred Dismuke in his war to "dry up" Atlanta.
Formerly it was the sale or manufacture of liquor; now the agents have resorted to the "possession of liquor" count in making arrests.
"If we cut off the demand we will render the supply useless," argues Mr. Dismuke.
"The most effective way to do this is to arrest all persons possessing whisky.
Arrest Customers.
"If we arrest the bootleggers' customers and then get the bootleggers' themselves, we get 'em coming and going, and I don't think dealers in illicit liquor can stand much of that."
The arrests for possessing whisky followed closely upon the arrest of thirteen for alleged sales of whisky, several of which were accomplished through the use of a "bootleggers' directory" taken from the person of an alleged dry law offender captured by Dismuke's men.
Another feature of the drive was the confiscation of forty-two gallons of corn whisky taken from a "cache" on Peachtree street by officers who stumbled upon the contraband while investigating the shooting of a negro.
The whisky was hidden in a bush, the officers reported.
