STEAM PACKET TO INDIA

The Calcutta Papers mention the arrival of the Steam ship Enterprize, from England. She did not make the best passage possible, because her steam was not used in the trade winds, the object being to save the fuel, to be sure that it should hold out. The experiment warrants the establishment of Steam Packets, provided there are 13 depots of fuel on the route. The Enterprize consumed 7 chaldrons coal in 24 hours. She has 2 engines of 60 horse power each. She draws 14 ft. 7 inches water—and embarked about 280 chaldrons coal.

The Captain of the Enterprize considers his passage from England to Calcutta to have been protracted 33 days by the want of fuel—and that it can be effected in 70 days.

He intends to make a new experiment in returning to England—but the trade winds will be against him.
