MRS. PEARY IS TO LEAD LIFE OF SECLUSION
Portland, Me., Aug. 7.-Announcing her intention to shun society until the return of her husband, of whose success she feels confident, Mrs. Robert E. Peary, wife of the famous explorer, will live almost as a hermitess this fall and winter at her summer cottage on Eagle Island, a desolate, rocky bit of land in Casco bay, 11 miles from Portland, and five miles from the nearest land. Mrs. Peary's two children, Marie, aged 11, and Robert E., Jr., aged 9, will remain with her. Their only protector will be Antonio Gomez, an old Spanish servant, who with his wife and five children, has been the major domo of the Peary household for ten years. Mrs. Peary may see her husband once more before his final departure for Arctic seas, since she expects to go by train to Sydney, Cape Breton, where the Roosevelt will touch on the way north. She will return to Eagle Island immediately afterward, however. Yesterday Mrs. Peary said: "I confidently expect that my husband will succeed in finding the pole this time. His experience in former voyages has given him thorough preparation for the final test. If he had not decided to go I should have urged it myself."
