Yesterday morning Sheriff Kays received word that a woman was missing under peculiar circumstances from the neighborhood of the Cahuenga Pass. It was related that a woman who had been living with Otto Ebert had suddenly and mysteriously disappeared, and that Otto had also departed. The matter was given over to Deputy Sheriff Henry Russell, and last night Otto was booked at the County Jail on suspicion. The story of the case is about as follows: Otto has a partner in the ranching business named Blubaker, who several weeks ago came to this city for a week. He also has a wife who is at work in this city. During Blubaker's absence the woman, who Otto says was his mother, disappeared from view, and the neighbors became suspicious but said nothing. When Blubaker returned to the ranch he noticed the absence of Otto's mother and asked him what had become of her. Otto replied, "She's sleeping." Blubaker then said that he was glad, and was rather taken back when Otto said: "She's sleeping the sleep that knows no waking." He then told his partner that his mother had died of consumption and that he had buried her. Blubrake inquired no further, but after Otto had come to the city the neighbors in talking over the matter came to the conclusion that there must have been something wrong or else there would have been a funeral. Deputy Sheriff Russell arrested Otto on San Pedro street, between Eleventh and Twelfth streets, and asked him what had become of his mother. He said that she had died of consumption, that he had kept her body thirty hours after death and then taken her up a canyon one night and buried her where no one could find her but himself. He said he had made a box to put her in, but didn't know why he didn't ask none of his neighbors in to the funeral. After considerable argument he promised to show Mr. Russell where the body is buried, and Coroner Meredith will go with them this morning to the place. The neighbors are said to be of the opinion that the woman was not his mother.
