MEMPHIS APPEAL
WEDNESDAY MORNING, DEC. 13, 1876.

THE NORTHERN DEMOCRACY.
We regret to see in some of the southern Democratic newspapers expressions of a want of confidence in the northern Democracy. Such papers taunt the northern Democrats with having elected Tilden by giving him a "solid south," and intimate that if the northern Democrats cannot now save them from misrule and the plunder of the carpet-bag robbers, they will look to other sources for relief. This sort of talk is as unjust to the northern Democracy as it is ungrateful. For ten long years, amid calumny, persecution, and even social ostracism, the Democrats of the north have stood by the constitutional rights of the south. Why should they be mistrusted now, in the hour of victory? None but ingrates make these unjust insinuations. If, in this great emergency, the Democrats of the north are not noisy as these fault-finders intimate, they maintain a commendable equanimity, and are proceeding cautiously, holding back their reserves for the last grand assault for constitutional liberty. We ask the desponding and impatient Democrats of the south to read the following extract from the great speech recently delivered by Horatio Seymour, of New York:
The Democratic party is too strong to be violent: It will not forfeit the confidence of the people by any display of passion: it can assert itself through the regular channels of political action. Frauds may delay the course of justice, may excite passion hurtful to the progress of our country, but legal and just punishment will surely follow. That party which controls towns, counties and States will control the country. The President, against whom is arrayed the body of the people, is an object of sympathy, not of fear. This is not a subject which belongs alone to those who are actively engaged in political affairs. It is a great American question, which concerns every citizen and every home. They can make a grand exhibition of the genius of our government, and of the power of its citizens by a calm rebuke to frenzied rulers. Even those who desperately seek to hide the records of past misconduct from the knowledge of our people will quail before an aroused public. One thing all men see: the Republican party cannot decide its own case in its own favor against the majority of the American people upon the certificate of branded men in Louisiana without making the body of our citizens and the world at large feel that it is a corrupt and partisan decision. We cannot have Mexican politics without Mexican disorders. The business men in all civilized countries have been taught by recent bankruptcies and disorders in governments made unstable by agitations to be watchful and distrustful when they see the slightest deviation from political honor, without which there can be no financial honor.
These words come freighted with wisdom. In the hour of need the northern Democrats will be true to themselves and their southern friends. They did not falter in the dark days of adversity, when they were trampled down by overwhelming majorities, animated by no hope of success, but still true as the needle to the poles in their sympathy for the wronged and oppressed south; and now, on the eve of permanent Democratic ascendancy, they have no motive for deserting the cause they have so long and faithfully served. Let the southern Democracy keep cool, and bide their time. The great army of northern Democrats are preparing for the struggle, and when it comes they will be in the front of the battle as they have been for the past ten years.
