Full Text
In order to cast the blame of negro supremacy at the South on the whites, a large part of the Radical press still persist in reiterating the falsehood that the number of disfranchised whites there is insignificant. Some of these presses have boldly asserted that not forty thousand have been disfranchised. The New Orleans Times meets this assertion with the counter statement, which it says cannot be truthfully denied, that in Louisiana alone thirty thousand whites are disfranchised by the reconstruction acts. The white population of Louisiana is not a tenth part of the whites included in the revolted States, so it follows that ten times thirty thousand have been disfranchised in those States. This would carry the number up to three hundred thousand. This number of those who could not register is probably in no degree exaggerated, if we consider not only those who were directly struck at by these acts, but those who were barred out by the constructions put upon them by the officers who execute these acts.—Republican.
