DYNAMITE IS USED TO SAVE NEW BRIDGE
Using hundreds of pounds of dynamite to break up an ice jam that has been threatening the false work under the main span of the Main street bridge, the workmen of the Lumsden gangs have been carrying on a veritable battle today to prevent serious damage.
In spite of the heavy blasts used to break the ice, the jam carried away about 70 feet of falsework, which was not especially essential to the support or the uncompleted span, but any further inroads will spell disaster. The giant powder shots could be heard all over the city today.
Great fields of ice 8 to 10 inches thick have been floating down the river for 24 hours and jam badly at the Mainstreet bridge, where the falsework is still being used. The big span, which is the longest in the state, can be finished in one more day, and the battle to save the falsework is a very strenuous one.
Men stationed at various points along the structure kept constant watch all day and every time a big chunk of ice lodged against the wooden supports, the workmen dropped a couple of sticks of giant dynamite onto the ice, shattering it. This morning the reports at times sounded like a battle was in progress.
Foreman G. A. Warning of the Lumsden construction syndicate, stated this noon that the men have the situation in control so far and by noon the ice was not coming down so much. All night tonight the watch will be kept and the gangs will work might and main with the steel work to get the main span done so that the load can be taken from the falsework.
