Full Text

The Northwestern Farmer is exhorting the Indiana farmers to pay more attention to butter and cheese. It tells them that the dairymen on the Western Reserve, Ohio, make from sixty to seventy-five dollars per head from their cows.—It is too late to begin for the present season, but they can think of it till next spring. Those who have plenty of fodder this fall may look out for good cows to eat it and be ready for spring. Many cows are usually for sale in the fall. Much of Indiana is thought to be superior to the Western Reserve for the dairy business. When a single farmer keeps twenty or more cows, all hands, men, women, boys and girls must be out at milking time. A good milker can easily milk five cows in an hour every night and morning. It is a good before breakfast chore. Twenty cows should yield $1,200 during the season of nine months. They should have about 30 acres of pasture.—Those, however, who cannot make the first quality of butter and cheese, had better let the business alone.
