Full Text

We are informed that the Tammany printers, last week, indulged themselves a little in their favourite play of misrepresentation. The endeavours of some of them to obtain exclusive privileges for their political manufacturing society were not crowned with immediate success; and their editors seized with avidity on a pretence for their usual cry of persecution. It seems that their leaders have projected the plan of a woollen factory, with a capital of half a million, to be owned exclusively by Tammany men. Under the specious cloak of patriotism they intend to obtain exclusive privileges from the Legislature; and then to employ the immense weight of such an establishment for political purposes. Now they complain, because the Assembly did not, as soon as asked, grant them all they asked. The truth of the affair is, that their petition is with others of a private nature adjourned to the next meeting of the Assembly, as several members declared that they wished for time to consider upon an affair of so much importance. Grants of exclusive privileges should ever be made with caution, as they inevitably tend to the promotion of aristocracy.
