Ezzard Charles Says
"No Rift
With
Wife!"

CINCINNATI, March 26 (ANP)-- Ezzard Charles,
heavyweight champion of the world, is married, but he still lives at home with his grandmother, Mrs. Maud Fos-
ter. His bride, the former Miss Gladys Gartrell, 22 still lives with her parents in the suburban town of Madison-
ville.

After telling reporters that he was still single, despite rumors to the contrary, for several weeks, the heavyweight king finally ad-
mitted that he and Miss Gartrell were secretly married Dec. 30, 1949. in New Kensington. Pa. He also startled them with the fact that he is the father of a baby girl, Deborah Charles. born in New Kensington Feb. 13. 1951.

Explaining that there was no marital rift between him and his wife, Charles explained the reason they are living apart: "It is be-
cause we just think it best to live this way while I am boxing. I am away from home so much. Being an athlete. I don't think I should set up a house at this time. We want to wait until things level off. I hope to buy a house here."

Stories had his bride blue-
eyed with blond hair. Many people thought she was white al-
though no paper ever said she was. It was first believed that the champion would announce his marriage just before what was to be a return match with Joe Louis, the great former champion.

This bout, scheduled to take place April 11 in Chicago, will not be held, however. At present both Charles and Louis are ill and are not to fight for about two months.

REPORTERS HERE in Cincin-
nati have sought to-interview both Charles and his wife.

Mrs. Charles has not allowed an inter-
view. although she has posed for pictures with the baby. She now has black hair and does not have blue eyes. She is very pretty, how-
ever. Charles said he first became interested in her while she was at-
tending Withrow High School in Cincinnati. Of these early days, he commented:

"When I first met her, she wouldn't go out with me. I re-
member when she was in some kind of a popularity contest. I used to call her up, but she wouldn't say yes."

On the professional side, Charles is rumored to be de-
fending his title May 30 in Chicago. Then he will fight Joey Maxim, light heavyweight champion of the world, at the Chicago Stadium.
