POETRY.

THE UNION OF HEARTS,

Oh! bright was the morning that smiled on my path
And gay were my visions, of bliss
When the maid of my soul fondly, plighted her truth.
And seal'd the dear pledge with

Twas the impulse of love 'twas the triumph
of the purest of passion refin'd
Twas the deed of the heart 'twas the interchange sweet
Of affection, of soul and of mind,

But short was the rapture--the beautiful flower
That was wont with effulgence to shine,
Slowly droop'd its pale head, it was sun-struck, it was
And chang'd to a blossom
For a seraph who saw it, and rode on the beam,
That to cherish its sweetness was given,
Too rich for earth deem'd it, and hallow'd the stream,
That nurtures its beauties in Heaven.
And there gaily springing it ripens to bloom,
As it drinks of the Heavenly ray :
And exhales from the cup the delicious perfume,
That sweetens the mansions of day.
Oh! when the last hour of my pilgrimage Sighs,
From earth this frail being to sever,
I'll seize the sweet flower as it springs in the skies,
To bloom on my bosom forever!
