Shocking Tragedy in the Eighth Ward.—A German named George Wagner killed his wife Mary, on Friday afternoon, at No. 516 Broome street, by striking her in the back of the head with an ax, death resulting almost instantly. The trouble grew out of an altercation regarding some money in possession of the wife. The blow was so powerful as to drive the ax almost through the brain, and the police found it still sticking in the poor victim's skull. Wagner was arrested by Officer Barker, of the Eighth Ward. He is thirty-nine years of age, and a cabinet maker by occupation. Deceased was about thirty years of age. Coroner Wildey held an inquest on the body of deceased. The jury rendered a verdict of death at the hands of George Wagner.
