Charge Seven With Peonage.

Last Friday the Federal grand jury, in session at Little Rock, returned indictments against seven parties, charging them with having kept a number of negroes in servitude. The parties indicted are prominent planters of Ashley county. The punishment for peonage is a fine of not less than $1,000 nor more than $5,000, and imprisonment not to exceed five years. These are the first indictments ever returned in Arkansas on the charge of peonage, although indictments for this crime have frequently occurred in other states of the South.
