S. J. Phillips, President Booker T. Washington Birthplace Memorial
BOOKER WASHINGTON BIRTHPLACE, Va.-- The eyes of the world are focused on the proceedings, now unfolding in the United States District Court in Washington, D. C., involving the eminent scholar, writer and world-traveler, Dr. W. E. B. Dubois.
The point at issue seems to be this: the Government is attempting to prove that the Peace Information Center. located in New York City, spread propaganda based on Soviet ideologies in behalf of the World Congress of the Defenders of Peace which sponsored the Stockholm Peace Appeal calling for a ban on the atomic bomb.
Dr. W. E. B. Dubois. along with other former officers of the Peace Information Center are charged with "failing to register the Center as a foreign agent".
Apparently the trial of DuBois will not determine whether he is or is not a Communist. The big question is: Was the Peace Information Center acting in the interest of a foreign government. and if so, why did it not register as a foreign agent?
All of this is of no particular concern to us except that DuBois' current predicament recalls his celebrated fracas with Booker T. Washington over the education of Negroes.
The differences of opinion expressed by these two men were resolved with the passage of time.
Fortunately, the theory of Washington was proved beyond the slightest doubt when the United States became involved in World War I. The lack of skilled Negroes during that period seriously handicapped this nation's productive capacity. It was then that Dr. DuBois recanted with the frank admission that Booker T. Washington was right in his advocacy of industrial training for Negroes.
Even though it took a presidential directive in World War II-the celebrated Executive Order 8802-to assure employment opportunities for minorities in defense plants employable Negroes were still largely in the unskilled classification.
It has taken the better part of three generations for Negroes to learn that their best chances for economic security in America must be in the skilled trades. The dominant group has realized that ever since this nation became an industrial giant. As a matter of fact, it was because of technological progress, streamlined, mass production and specialized know-how that has given the United States its preeminent position, and resulted in such a high standard of living for its citizens.
Soviet communism cannot match American democracy in an all-out effort to capture the soul and mind of man. There can be no liberty without freedom, and freedom does not exist in Russia. It is impossible to unthinkable and unbelievable for a man like DuBois, to embrace Godless Russia and to become its tool while espousing a lost cause.
Naturally, it is impossible to
