The Daily Evansville Journal

Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Indiana

What is this article about?

The Daily Journal satirically mocks the State Sentinel's indignation over the Synod of Indiana's adoption of a paper on slavery at its October 16 session in Greensburg, arguing that religious bodies should not discuss civil issues like slavery, theft, or adultery to avoid mixing politics with religion and losing Democratic members. It references Rev. E. D. McMaster and Democratic papers.

What is to be Done

We regret to learn that the piety of the State Sentinel has received a serious shock. Its faith in Christianity is fearfully exercised. Religiously, it would be in great danger of backsliding, were it possible for it to "fall from grace."

One of the proprietors of the Sentinel is a regular attendant, if he is not a pillar, in the Old School Presbyterian Church.

Unmindful of this fact, the Synod of Indiana, at its recent session in Greensburg, October 16th, did, then and there, without consulting with, or asking the advice of, the said proprietor of the Sentinel, have offered and adopted "a paper upon the subject of slavery, designed as an expression of the Synod in regard to the civil affairs and political difficulties of the nation." This conduct, every one must admit, was very reprehensible.

What right has the Synod to talk about slavery? That is a civil question, though it is most always uncivilly discussed.

What right has the Synod to talk about stealing? That is a civil question. So with adultery and all the other crimes recognized by our laws--the Synod ought to be careful about meddling with these civil questions. It will get to mixing politics with religion, and there is danger they will lose all the Democratic members of their Church, if they are not careful how they do this thing.

We are surprised that our friend Rev. E. D. McMaster should so far forget himself as to introduce a paper of the character spoken of, without consulting the Democratic papers, as to whether its passage would be mixing politics with religion. We trust that, being fairly warned by the virtuous indignation to which the Sentinel has given utterance, he will be more circumspect hereafter, and not even preach a sermon against theft without asking the Sentinel if it will regard such a sermon as an attack on the Democratic party. We advise him to be careful how he rebukes sin of any description, unless he first ascertains that the Cincinnati Enquirer, State Sentinel and Vincennes Sun will not regard it as mixing politics with religion.
