Full Text
The Washington Union makes the following strong and just remarks in relation to the duty imposed on every true Democrat of standing by the President in the present crisis:
If there should be seen a single democrat to waver, suspicion of infidelity to the party must necessarily arise. The battle will be fierce, but it will not be lost. The democratic party must be preserved!
If patriotic services deserve reward at the hands of the people when displayed on the field of battle, they no less deserve it when displayed in civil life. And equally true is it that the people always frown upon treason and cowardice. Who is a true friend to the administration that can hesitate to give his warm and cordial support to a measure which like that referred to, promises so much good to the country?— Who has more personal and political reputation at stake than he who leads and heads the democratic army? Let his patriotism and courage animate the true democracy in Congress, and all will be well!— Be, at least, will stand by the constitution and the Union: and if by treasonable hands they should be sacrificed, he will go down with them, their last and unflinching supporter. But we have no fear of any such result. With no aim but duty before him, he must be victorious; the principles which he represents must inevitably triumph; and the victory will shed lustre on his name in history, while those who desert him, and abandon their party, can have no claim to that honor and gratitude to which the true patriot is always justly entitled. Sworn to support the constitution and preserve the laws, he admits no conclusions not clearly and unquestionably legal; and to follow him, therefore, at this crisis, is only to follow in the pathway of the law and the constitution.
