Full Text

The recent Maine Republican Convention was the largest ever held in that State, and both the wealthy aspirants for the gubernatorial nomination were interested in making it so. Hence it appears that many delegates had their expenses paid, both Robie and Thomas footing bills for their supporters. This is freely admitted, though a defender of the purity of the Convention 'does not believe a single vote was changed by bribery.' These fine moral distinctions of Maine politics would not do for Massachusetts.-[Springfield Union.]

The virtuous Massachusetts politicians do not indulge in any such immoral practices. They believe that this is a rich man's government. Only rich men, who can pay their own expenses to the conventions are admitted as delegates. A poll tax is assessed upon the poor voters, who are not allowed to deposit their ballots until it is paid-and that reminds us that it is wickedly charged that the rich and virtuous candidates of Massachusetts have been known to pay the poll tax of a large number of poor voters so that the right of franchise might be exercised in their behalf.
