A SOLDIER'S TRICK.

While our army was encamped near Laredo, a soldier from the Colorado named Vasquez left the camp, went into town with a few of his comrades, and marching up to the town jail, declared that he was Gen. Vasquez and had come to release all prisoners. The jailor, not recognizing him as Gen. Vasquez, refused to open the prison door: but Vasquez determined that his authority should be respected, and immediately drove the jailor from the prison and broke open the door. The prisoners, about twenty in number, came huddling around him—"some in rags and some in jags"—all highly gratified at their deliverance. Vasquez ordered them to give three cheers for Texas. This they did with high glee. He then told them that they were on Texian ground and were free to go whither they wished. He then marched back to camp, and satisfied with this exercise of official dignity, resumed his station in the ranks.
