Full Text

A meeting has been called in New York, the design of which is to ratify the Compromise. Several of the New York papers speak in commendation of the movement. To the South, such a movement is highly important, nor is it less important to the Union. The disposition, prevalent in many parts of the North, to resist the enforcing of the recent acts of Congress, is highly detrimental to the interests of the nation, and if persisted in, must result in the most serious consequences. The only true ground for the safety of the Union, is, the observance of law; unless the laws be observed, peace cannot reign, and without its reign, disunion must eventually come. However, we are not fearful; the North will see her error in this particular, as she has done in others; more—we do not believe that the disposition to resist the law, is, by any means, so common as some persons suppose. It is true, that there is great noise; but this is not astonishing. a few noisy mouths, can by constant effort, misrepresent the true state of the public mind.
