Windproof Span Designed
After Wind Tunnel Tests

By 1948, a new Tacoma Narrows
Bridge will be built over Puget
Sound, replacing the one that, four
months after its completion in
1940, was destroyed by wind, says
Collier's. The new span, the first to
have its design based on wind-tunnel
tests of a model, will have shock
absorbers at numerous points.
It will also have air slots in the
floor which will enable it to withstand
a wind nearly three times as strong as
that which caused the former structure
to crash.
