PORTSVOUTH TUESDAY, JANUARY 7, 1834.
This being our first publication since the commencement of the new year, we would take the opportunity for tendering the customary compliments of the season to our friends and subscribers. A wish that you may enjoy an existence free from the alloy of sorrow which constitutes so large an ingredient in the mixed cup of life of which we all annually partake, would surely meet with that disappointment which is the invariable concomitant of a wish so vain and futile; and as we like not to promulgate a wish, the unsatisfactory development of which we had anticipated ere it was elicited, we can but proffer you our ardent desire that you may enjoy happiness and prosperity to such an extent as the wisdom and beneficence of Providence may direct.
Next to you kind patrons, come ourselves. If you have any desire or intention to reciprocate our wish, you cannot give us better or more convincing evidence of it than by affording us an opportunity of tendering you our receipts for all that may be due us for a year or more, and thereby enable us to close from 1500 to 2000 accounts, which though small, individually, in the aggregate amount to a large sum.
