WARREN.
SINGULAR FACT.
It is a Fact that not only the citizens of every State in the Union, except Rhode Island, but the subjects of the King of Great Britain exercise the right of voting for their Representatives upon a small personal property qualification, while we, in the pretendedly free and enlightened state of Rhode Island are excluded from the exercise of this right unless we are able and willing to purchase a strip of this land of no use to us. The subjects of the monarch of Great Britain vote for their members of Parliament. but the citizens of Rhode Island of the same qualifications are not allowed to vote for Representatives to our General Assembly. Rhode Island A LAND OF LIBERTY? RIDICULOUS, to call it so'—Prov. Patriot.
By the election law of this State, no citizen however virtuous, intelligent, patriotic, punctual in the payment of his taxes and in the discharge of all his civil duties is a FREEMAN unless he owns land.—
What then is he? We forbear to answer the question in this enlightened country.
We are ashamed to expose such a law, by commentary upon it. One thing is certain such an estimable citizen by our LAW IS NOT A FREEMAN.
The best oak is sometimes called not walnut but it can never be bent nor broken.—lb.
