FROM MOBILE.

Mobile, Aug. 17.—Major Gen. Frank Gardner assumed command of the District of the Gulf to-day. The people are much pleased with the appointment. Yesterday evening the enemy embarked in fifty launches at Montrose. Our cavalry fired upon them, killing two and wounding several. Last night Maj. Carroll, agent of exchange of prisoners at this point, returned from the enemy's fleet, after sending packages and letters for the Dauphin Island prisoners. No hopes are entertained of an exchange of prisoners at present. Yesterday a force of the enemy from Pensacola, 2000 strong, crossed Perdido river towards Mobile. All quiet in the bay to-day.
