The Sundar Tattler is not, by any means, distressed by the fact that Mr. Joslin has been reassigned to duty in one of the schools of the city. The Tattler was never of the conviction that the accomplished professor had committed any very awful crime, and it is doubtless due to its treatment of the subject that public opinion here has been rather with him than with the Board of Education in the matter. But we are puzzled to know how the gentlemen of the Board can justify their very palpable inconsistency. If they were right in expelling him from the service of the city, they are wrong in taking him back. If they wronged him in expelling him from the High School, they should right him by putting him back into it. His reappointment is a sort of confession that they were unjust in subjecting him to the humiliation and disgrace they forced him to bear less than a month ago. The trouble probably is that the members of the new Board of Education are a little prudish in their sanctity; and that what was at most only an irregularity grew, when seen through their high moral spectacles, into the magnitude of a great public crime. Since they have learned what slight culpability people of ordinary every day morals attach to the business, they have revised their notions and their punishment and decided to give Mr. Joslin a chance to redeem himself from the blow their unnecessary harshness has inflicted. The Tattler will say, at the same time, for the School Board, that it is a thousand times better for its members to be a little too good for anything than, like the members of the old Board, a good deal too bad for human endurance.
