Question: What are the correct place cards for a formal dinner?

Answer: At a formal dinner, as society understands formal, place cards are of white, usually about 1 1/2 inches in height and two inches long. A crest may be engraved if the family uses one.

At a formal dinner, each gentleman receives an envelope addressed to himself which contains a card bearing the name of the woman he is to take into dinner. The envelopes are presented on a tray to each gentleman just before he goes into the drawing room or upon his arrival. At this time he is also shown the table diagram so he can see where he is placed. This system of envelopes is used only at a formal dinner of 12 or over.
