OPEN RANGES.
Advantages of the Splendid District Lying North of the Yellowstone.
Field Notes by an Old Herder.
Sendoff--First National Directors' Meeting,
The Ranges North.
North of the Yellowstone, within the limits of Custer county, presents a series of unoccupied ranges that are pronounced fully equal to if not better than the cattle ranges of the south side by competent judges, who have just returned from an exploring trip and have viewed the country from the Red river to the Musselshell, say that these north side ranges have all the necessary requisites for stock, such as wood, water, good hay land, good shelter and excellent grazing.
There are some advantages in favor of the north side that are very important. Its rapid creeks empty into the Yellowstone. It is within the influence of the chinook belt and its valleys have a minimum of annual snow. The newly established ferries and the low rates at which they cross stock diminish the objection that there was to utilizing the north side before the bridge is built across the Yellowstone. These are some of the facts that are inducing old as well as new settlers to select ranges on the north side of the river for incoming stock. Cattle men need only examine that district in order to be convinced of its desirability.
