FOR SHAME!
The two republican daily papers of this city, the Sun and the Tribune, have during the past week covered themselves with disgrace and infamy.
For four days The Leader has been under a boycott. There has been an organized and powerful conspiracy to crush this paper out of business because it has seen fit to express an opinion on a subject of public interest. As to whether this opinion was right or wrong had nothing to do with the case so far as they were concerned. They might hold and express opposite views from those promulgated by this paper, but the moment an organized attempt was made to throttle free speech, to put shackles on the freedom of the press, it was their duty, and if they were decent and self respecting journals they should have stigmatized the act as revolutionary and dangerous to the last degree.
Take away from the press its freedom—but where is the use of discussing the matter? Freedom seems to have been taken away from the Sun at the very commencement of the trouble. It apparently did not even dare to whisper or insinuate. It maintained an oppressive silence whilst freedom of speech, the dearest right of every American citizen and newspaper, was being assailed and a conspiracy was at work to crush it into silence by the tyrannical methods of a Russian czar.
And to their everlasting shame be it said the Sun and Tribune stood idly by watching the proceeding and never even raised a feeble pipe in protest.
