WE SHOULD DO IT-

This writer with advertising representatives of The Times had occasion yesterday to visit the city of Louann on an advertising proposition.

We went to the leading merchants in that town with an advertising proposal. Nothing exceptional in that. But what followed did impress us.

Every man talked to asked this question: "Have you talked to the Chamber of Commerce?" We have a policy here of referring all publicity and advertising schemes to our Chamber of Commerce. When that body passes upon it we will talk business."

That little experience might have discommoded us a little but we were struck by the soundness of the argument. We admire the businessmen of Louann for sticking by their Chamber of Commerce on such things.

We wondered why it is that our merchants do not do the same thing in handling the thousand and one advertising schemes confronting the merchants of this city every day in the year. Men will come in with this story to the merchant:

* "I'll give you this proposition exclusively and your competitor cannot have the advantage of it."

The merchant falls and in ninety per cent of the cases he is "bilked" and that is all of the good he got out of it.

The business men of Louann are not interested in any scheme that does not help the whole town. They refuse to take a scheme even when it might be exclusive, before it is placed before the advertising and publicity committee of the Chamber of Commerce.

El Dorado merchants put out thousands of dollars every year on spurious schemes because they might represent some "benefit program" or some organization is backing them, that they are afraid not to give advertising.

If every merchant would demand of every solicitor on every scheme a letter from the Chamber of Commerce approving the scheme, fifty per cent of the schemes would stop right there and the business men would not be bothered.

The charge may be made that a newspaper fighting against promiscuous schemes of advertising is selfish, that the money that goes into these schemes should go to the newspaper.

We deny any such charge. There are many forms of legitimate advertising outside of the newspaper field. Many successful schemes.

Newspapers have been tried and most merchants realize if they have something to offer for sale newspaper advertising will sell it.

But what we would like to see is El Dorado merchants taking the Louann attitude toward the ambitious promoter of advertising who wants a meal ticket for a day or two and goes out and bilks the unsuspecting for a ticket with some advertising that may be classed as pure donation.

Louann business men are setting a mighty example.
