NEW YORK, Aug. 7—An Italian steamer made this port at an early hour this morning telling of the extreme dangers and difficulties which merchant ships must experience in crossing the ocean to the American side. During its voyage thru the Mediterranean sea it battled with a German submarine for seven hours and finally eluded it in a fog which suddenly came up.
The Italian ship was armed only with deck guns and could place but a weak fight against the sea monster. It was sighted late at night and played off at a distance of about a mile until daybreak. At daybreak it commenced its fight to sink the ship. Torpedoes were sent thru the water but for some reason or other they were unsuccessful in hitting the mark. The fire from the ship was ineffective. A number of times the gunners hit their mark but no serious damage was done.
Three Americans were abandoned at a port for protective purposes. The ship will load and retrace its tracks to the Mediterranean.
