WEE OKLAHOMA MISS WINS
PILOT'S LICENSE DESPITE
HANDICAP IN SIZE

TULSA, Okla., (AP)- When 91-pound Maxine Miller, just out of Tulsa high school, climbed into a training plane for her first flying lesson she was unable to see out of the cockpit.

Undaunted, she bought herself several pillows, used them to make the pilot's seat higher, and now she owns a limited commercial flier's license.

Miss Miller says aviation is irresistible, and she has forged steadily ahead with her lessons despite the handicaps of her size. When she qualified for her private rating there were seven cushions in the cockpit.

She tried her first landing with five cushions, bounced a bit, added two more cushions, and then made perfect three-pointers.

When she took her limited commercial training the youthful aviatrix had the seat elevated considerably and extensions placed on the rudder bars so that her feet could reach them. Difficulties were encountered when she attempted spinning practice and tests. Her weight was not sufficient. So she had a 100-pound sandbag strapped in the cockpit.

Now Miss Miller is trying to decide whether to seek a transport pilot's rating. She is the daughter of Bert Miller, Tulsa oil drilling contractor.
