McFadden Would Spend Recovery Funds For Trade Thinks Relief Coin Would Best Be Spent to Re- vive Business
WASHINGTON, May 9. (UP) Bernarr MacFadden, magazine publisher, last night suggested that the government collect no taxes from business for one year and that the proposed $5,000,000,000 recovery fund be diverted for the exclusive use of encouraging trade revival.
He made his recommendation in a radio debate with Senator Lewis B. Schwellenbach, D., Wash., on the administration's new recovery program. The publisher attacked the "Hitlerized restrictions" in the Wagner labor act and charged that the National Labor board has proved to be "just a modern Spanish inquisition."
The pending wages-hours bill. he said, will be another "sledge-hammer blow to business," and he appealed to the people to barrage their congressmen with letters and telegrams demanding that they vote against it. New Deal regulatory policies. he said. are in harmony with "Hitler's or Mussolini's plan of government" and threaten American democracy.
He questioned whether the new recovery fund would be used for political purposes and vigorously condemned the pump-priming policy.
