ELLIS AND CARR GO TO ROAD CAMP
Sentenced to Penitentiary for Manslaughter--They Begin Serving Terms of Three and Five Years Respectively.
After being sentenced in the circuit court to three and five years respectively, W. Y. Ellis, who killed N. P. Willis last July, and George Carr, who killed Adolph Topf in Argenta June 5, were yesterday afternoon taken to the county road convict camp on Brodie Creek by Deputy Sheriffs Reichardt and Engstrom and will this morning begin work on the county roads, as all other short-term convicts are required to do.
Ellis was sentenced to three years by Judge R. J. Lea after Dr. E. P. Bledsoe and Dr. J. P. Sheppard had reported to the court that the prisoner was suffering from pulmonary tuberculosis and that either close confinement or hard labor would cause his case to advance more rapidly. Judge Lea said in passing sentence that he believed Ellis guilty and thought he should receive the full punishment for manslaughter, to which he pleaded guilty, but not desiring to impose what might prove to be a death sentence, he would make it three years instead of seven years.
Carr was sentenced yesterday afternoon after Judge Lea had denied the motion of his attorneys for a new trial. The sentence imposed by the judge was fixed by the jury, which found Carr guilty of voluntary manslaughter for killing Adolph Topf. Carr was a police officer in Argenta and last June had a quarrel with Topf on the street, when, according to the evidence, Topf took Carr's club away from him. Other parties spoke to the men to pacify them, and Topf handed Carr's club back and turned to walk away when Carr drew his revolver and shot several times at Topf, inflicting wounds that proved fatal.
To Be Given Light Work.
Neither Ellis nor Carr was taken to the penitentiary, both being transferred directly to the county road camp. For the time being, it was stated last night they will be given light work such as setting stakes and assisting in laying out the grades. Ellis' physical condition will be given consideration by the road warden, it was stated.
