BULK OF WPA FUNDS GO TO ROADS, SEWING

Washington, Feb. 2.-The bulk of the $8,263,659 for Works Progress Administration projects in North Carolina is being spent for road construction, sewing, water and sewer systems, public buildings and parks and playgrounds.

A breakdown made public today by Works Progress Administrator Harry L. Hopkins disclosed 79.3 per cent of the total amount had been allocated for such projects.

The figures were compiled as of December 7, and the projects will be completed between April 1 and April 15, the WPA announced.

The breakdown showed that $2,292,127 or 27.7 per cent of the total, has been allocated for road construction, with $1,344,779 of this amount being used for farm to market and other secondary roads.

Sewing and other goods projects have received the second largest amount, $1,435,257, or 17.4 per cent of the state's total. Estimated cost of water and sewer systems under consideration was placed at $1,153,233, or 13.9 per cent. Allocated for public buildings was $885,934, or 10.7 per cent, while $794,044, or 9.6 per cent, is being spent on parks and playgrounds.

Sanitation projects underway were estimated to cost $484,921, or 5.9 per cent of the total, while the $277,074 estimated cost on flood control projects and the $283,561 estimated cost of educational, professional and clerical projects represented approximately 3.4 per cent each of the total.

A total of $180,000 had been allocated for airport construction, or 2.2 per cent of the state's WPA projects cost. Miscellaneous projects were estimated to cost $477,458, or 5.8 per cent.

The WPA's roundup showed 963 projects underway in the state. Of this number, 225 were road construction projects; 156 public building construction; 127 sewing and goods projects; 96 water and sewer systems; 84 educational, professional and clerical; 99 miscellaneous; 85 sanitation; 78 playgrounds; 12 flood control, and one an airport.
