ELECTION

On Wednesday next at 11 o'clock, the organization of the civil government of the State, for the present political year, will commence—Three or four days generally elapse before the elections necessary to a completion of the Senate and Council boards, can take place. The House of Representatives will consist of about 450 members; about 91 less than the greatest number which it ever contained. After the necessary oaths and declarations are administered by His Excellency the Governor, and taken and subscribed by the members of each legislative branch, respectively, they will proceed to elect their officers for the ensuing year. This business being completed, the Governor, Lieut. Governor and other dignitaries of the state, together with the Legislature, will form a procession to the Old South Meeting-house under the escort of The Independent Cadets, commanded by Col. Adams. The election sermon will be preached by the Rev. Mr. Eaton, of Boxford. The legislature will return in procession to the State-House and one of the first acts of the session, will be to appoint a committee to count the votes, returned to the department of state, for Governor and Lt. Governor. The report will in all probability be made on Thursday; and Gov. Brooks, and Lt. Gov. Phillips be inducted into office on Friday afternoon before a convention of both Houses, and the officers of State. The vacancies which may exist in the Senate and will be early supplied—and the choice of nine Counsellors to advise the Governor, will take place after his induction. By the Constitution of Massachusetts, the selection of the members of the Council must be made from the Senate; and the first choice is seldom permanent—that the condition which prescribes this course, is rendered nugatory in practice. The nominal counsellors generally resign and the real ones are then chosen from among the people at large. The council board being completed, the Governor will be waited upon by a committee of both Houses to inform him of their organization, and their desire to receive any communication he may think proper to make; this will probably occur in time, for his Excellency to deliver his speech on Saturday.—Bos. Pat.
