Gen. Desha, the late governor, surrendered the executive department to his successor, Gov. Metcalfe, last Tuesday evening. It was rumored in town, a few days previously, that Desha intended to hold on to the office until the meeting of the Legislature. This rumor, we were surprised to find, was not wholly without foundation: for he continued at the Secretary's office transacting executive business on Tuesday, a week after his successor was qualified and to a citizen who stepped in and was conversing with him on the subject of retiring intimated, that Gov. Metcalfe was not qualified, and that he, Desha, was the best judge of that matter. In the course of the day several gentlemen waited on him for the purpose of remonstrating with him against his supposed purpose. They were received it was said, with the utmost politeness, and finally told by Gen. Desha, that he would deliver up the seals on the next day—as this was holding the office only a few days over the constitutional and usual term, and no great mischief was likely to ensue, the gentlemen departed content. In the afternoon Gen Desha went to the Auditor's office to have his accounts for salary adjusted, and desired the auditor to settle the account down to Wednesday—the next day. But being informed that it would not be allowed to that time, and only to the completion of four years, amounting to $8000, his excellency concluded to give up the seals at once, and accordingly did so the same evening and left the town on Wednesday morning.
