" We this day enter on the publication of a state document, of as much interest and importance as any which has been offered to the public within our recollection. It is a circumstantial narrative, supported by official documents, of the artifice, hypocrisy, treachery, and tyranny, by which Bonaparte drew the virtuous and unfortunate king Ferdinand from Madrid to Bayonne, compelled him to descend from the throne of Spain, and renounce his right to it. The facts and proofs are furnished by M. Cevallos, who filled this important office of Minister for foreign affairs, under the late and present king of Spain, accompanied the latter to Bayonne, and who, notwithstanding the noble stand he made there in support of the indefeasible rights of his master, was continued by Joseph Bonaparte in the same appointment. With the subsequent conduct of this very able and honest statesman, the public are already acquainted. He went in the train of the usurper to Madrid, from whence he made his escape, to throw himself into the arms of his country, and give it the full benefit of his virtues and talents. When we were first apprised that M. Cevallos had abandoned the traitorous service into which he was impressed, we were persuaded that the interval would not be long until he laid before his country and Europe, the particulars of these extraordinary transactions. This he has done in one of the clearest, most luminous, as well as the most temperate expositions it has ever fallen to our lot to peruse."
