Claughton, Democratic owner of the Roney Hotel, where the dinner was being held threatened to put out the lights and cancel the affair unless the twenty-five Negroes present left the dinner hall. About 150 of the white guests present joined them in a noisy protest walkout. It was led by Wesley E. Garrison, Republican state committeeman and co-chairman of the Lincoln Day dinner. Before he left, Mr. Garrison told the 400 persons present that "Abe Lincoln would turn over in his grave if he saw what just happened."
