TIMELY BLAZE AVERTS
BLAZE IN DOWNTOWN AREA

Timely discovery on the part of a pedestrian and the prompt action of Patrolman Benoni Durand prevented a serious fire which might have resulted from a blaze which broke out Sunday in the old Cloutier saloon which is situated in the rear of the Putnam Inn building on Main Street. Thomas Denning saw smoke issuing from the wooden structure as he chanced to be passing and notified Officer Durand who immediately turned in an alarm. Firemen from the Central Fire Station nearby extinguished the flames in short order with chemicals. The flames, which started in rubbish in the cellar, might have caused considerable damage if they had not been discovered in time. The building they threatened is situated close to the former Mullan store, also a frame structure, which in turn is adjacent to the Putnam Savings Bank and the Putnam Inn Building.
