A terrible tragedy was enacted at Deer Creek, California, on the 2d inst. A Dr. McMurtha and his brother owned a quartz vein there which was 'jumped' by twelve men. On the second inst. entered a tunnel on the vein, barricaded the mouth of it with pine logs, and declared they would kill the first man who should throw any dirt into the mouth of the tunnel. Dr. McMurtha threw a shovel full of dirt in the tunnel, and forthwith one of the jumpers shot him with a rifle. Thereupon the surviving brother drew his revolver and fired all his charges; then taking the revolver from the dead body of his brother and fired all its charges into the twelve. The result was that four were killed and seven wounded. Mr. McMurtha gave himself up to the officers of the law, and after an examination he was held to have acted justifiably, and was discharged.
