This charming creature returned to this city in the midst of the terrible storm of Monday night. She was utterly astonished at the noise of the thunder and at the brilliancy of the lightning, as they rolled and crashed and flashed around her on her entrance to the city. "This is a wonderful country," said Fanny-"a very great country, indeed-and the lightning is very pretty also." And Fanny-the divine Fanny is right. It is a great country-an extensive country, and the thunder and lightning is very extensive also.
On her arrival she immediately engaged the suite of rooms No. 1 at the American Hotel, and by the prompt attention of Cozzens, and his unique and unrivalled arrangements, she entirely recovered from her astonishment by Tuesday (yesterday) morning. As she had determined to leave us in the afternoon boat for the Catskill Mountain House, and therefore had but a few hours to spend in the city, she determined to pay a visit to Wall street, but with a totally different intention from that which actuated the devil the last time that he paid a visit to that region, to regulate the rogues, brokers, borrowers, jobbers, Jews, financiers, and fools of all kinds.
The sky was radiant with brightness and beauty- "Hung be the Heavens with blue," seemed to be the order of the day-the lofty cerulean arch of Heaven was undimmed by a cloud or speck-every thing around partook of the cheerfulness which the advent of so delightful a change naturally creates-when "Brighter far than this-than these," at about half past two o'clock "la belle Fanny" came tripping into Wall street, to the astonishment of all the bulls, and bears, and gentlemen, and loafers then lounging about that not very sanctified region.
The sensation that her presence in the purlieus of the banking district created was truly wonderful. A great many brokers forgot to shave, many stock gamblers forgot to cheat, and several jobbers and dealers forgot to pay their notes. There was a great deal of "shinning" but all to no purpose. The divine Fanny was soon surrounded by a crowd of the richest men and the greatest rascals in the world- and from these she was glad to escape into the Bank of America.
It was the first time she ever saw the inside of a bank in this country, and she was astonished again. The utmost confusion reigned amongst every officer in the bank, from the president to the porter. One broker stopped a banker, "What's the news?" said one-"how is stocks?" "Why the Cracovienne is up a trifle-my God, I forgot, I mean Dry Dock is down." "How is business?" "Brisk as Fanny Eissler," was the reply. "I say Dick," said young P., "By heaven, the divine Fanny Elssler is in the Bank of America." "Is she, by God," was the reply, "let's go in." "I have no deposit there," said P. "Then watch her legs as she courses down the steps," said Dick. The devil looked on from the New Exchange, and laughed till he had to hold his sides.
Within the bank itself all was confusion and disorder. The porter stopped counting the specie; one of the clerks made a double entry; deposits were refused; one or two in the hurry, overdrew their accounts; checks were dishonoured, and marked on the back "Fanny Elssler," the receiving teller entered a draught to the credit of Mr. Cachucha, and the mistakes of all kinds, we are told, were numerous.
In short, the business if not the bank was suspended whilst all gazed with delight on the charming creature then flitting around them. Mammon was for a few minutes without a worshipper; all deserted his shrine for that of beauty, and if the divine Fanny were to pay a daily visit to that "den of thieves." Wall street, as the Scripture says, we verily believe she would effect such a reformation, that we might say something in its favor.
La belle Eissler left last evening, at five o'clock, in the boat for Catskill. Joy and delight attend her. She opens at the Park on Monday next-plays eight nights, and then visits Saratoga for pleasure.
