Full Text

GLASGOW, March 16. We are advised from Islay that on the 9th of February (remarkable for the great storm of wind and snow) a Gentleman of that island, in the evening, ordered two of his servants to drive a parcel of black cattle to a more sheltered enclosure than where they were then grazing. In doing this the men had to drive the cattle against the storm, along the side of a creek, or small arm of the sea; but the severity of the weather was such that the cattle, rather than face the storm, took to the sea, and next day 40 of them were found drowned on the other side of the creek : The men very narrowly escaped; one of them reached home, with great difficulty, that night; the other was obliged to take shelter under a sandy brae, where, by covering himself over with sand, he withstood the storm until next morning.

On the same night, and in the same neighbourhood, a young woman perished on her return from a well with water. The water pails she had with her were found next morning between the well and the house; and her corpse, after several days search, was found under the snow about three miles off, the head being wrapped round with one of her petticoats, and her feet drawn up within the others.
