ESCAPED FROM AUBURN.
Burglar Lahey Dug His Way to Liberty Through Four Feet of Solid Masonry with Table Knives.
Auburn, N. Y., Oct. 9.--William Lahey, aged 31 years, escaped from Auburn prison by digging through four feet of solid masonry composing the roof of his cell and then sawing through the roof proper. The escape is one of the most laborious and difficult ever accomplished in Auburn prison and it is presumed has required months of work.
Lahey worked his way out by means of knives stolen from the mess room and hid the plaster, stone and brick in his bed and pillows. A box filled with sand, large enough to fill the hole and covered with a white washed cloth prevented the discovery of the hole by the sounding process. By a knife made into a saw he cut through the prison roof and descended to the wall by means of a rope attached to the coping of the prison by means of a pair of pincers stolen from one of the shops which he converted into a hook.
From the wall he jumped to the walk and went free.
Lahey is a Buffalo man, and had only a year and nine months of a five years' sentence to serve. His crime was burglary, third degree, and larceny. He is five feet eight inches in height, weighs 140 pounds, brown hair, gray eyes, light skin, scar across the bridge of his nose, and ring finger of his left hand is amputated at the knuckle joint. He has an oval face. The escaped man had previously served ten years here, and lost his commutation by two attempts to escape. In April, 1882, he got out, but was recaptured two days later at Syracuse. A reward of $50 is offered for his capture.
