Planes Nearing Goal in Coast-to-Coast Hop

withdrew at St. Paul. Pilots reported much better flying weather today than they had yesterday over the middle west.

MILES CITY, Mont., Sept.21. -Winging his way westward in the class A race of the air derby from New York to Spokane, E. E. Ballough in a Laird commercial biplane, arrived here from Aberdeen, S. D., at 10:27 a. m. today and took off again for Butte at 10:37 a. m. Ballough, who has been leading consistently in this division of the great air race, was the first in but was followed closely by three others. But he maintained his position at the head of the class A flyers and started for Butte, 335 miles away, the last control stop between here and Spokane. C. W. Holman in another Laird commercial was in at 10:51 and out again at 11 a. m. N. P. Mamer, piloting the City of Spokane, arrived at 11:01 a. m. and took off at 11:09 a. m. John Wood, in a Waco, was in at 11:17 a. m., and out again at 11:23:30 a. m.

GLENDIVE, Mont., Sept. 21. -Two stragglers in the class A division of the Spokane air derby came in from the east today and took off for Spokane, the goal of the transcontinental air racers. The City of Tacoma with G. Smith at the controls arrived at 10:45 a. m. and took off at 10:52. R. R. Johnson in a Swallow landed at 11:23 and took off for the west at 11:13 a. m. Eleven planes which had spent the night here or in Fargo, N. D., departed earlier in the day for Billings, where the next brief control stop will be made. The planes will then head for Missoula, the final control stop in this division of the derby.
