Mayor of Bronzeville Race Expected to Be Close Contest This Year

On Monday, October 13, the second annual Mayor of Bronzeville contest will open, sponsored by the Associated Negro Credit Union, a Twin City organization.

Last year this contest, the first in the Twin Cities, provided an opportunity for discussion of many important issues affecting Negroes in these communities.

Much more enthusiasm, before and after the final selection of the "Mayor," is expected this year.

Candidacy for this honorary office is open to any person who is a resident of the Twin Cities, 21 years of age or over and who will be governed by the rules of this contest which are printed elsewhere in this paper. Candidates must file between October 13 and October 21 at places designated in the rules. A filing fee of 10c will be charged.

The "Mayor" will be inaugurated at a Thanksgiving Ball to be held Thursday night, November 20.

Cash Prizes for Many
Mayor Elect $25
Runner-up $10
Third $5
First Door Prize $20
Second Door Prize $10

Both Mayors Endorse Bronze Mayor Race

Mayors of both cities have followed the precedent set last year and endorsed this campaign and have offered their cooperation.

Letters from Mayor Marvin Kline, Minneapolis, and Mayor John J. McDonough, St. Paul, are printed below.

Minneapolis, Minn.

Gentlemen:

I am very interested to hear that another election is to be held in the Twin Cities on November 20 for a Mayor of Bronzeville.

Last year's contest was a huge success, and I am certain that this year's will surpass even that.

Feel free to call upon me for any assistance you may desire.

Best wishes for a successful campaign and may the best man win!

JOHN McDONOUGH.
Mayor. St. Paul, Minn.

October 7, 1941.

Mr. Talmage B. Carey,
Secretary-Treasurer.
Associated Negro Credit Union,
3942 Third Avenue South,
Minneapolis, Minn.

Dear Mr. Carey:

It gives me the greatest of pleasure to endorse the Mayor of Bronzeville campaign your organization is sponsoring on behalf of your people. I can see that it has outstanding possibilities from the social and educational viewpoint.

Thrift—despite some of the practices into which we as a nation and as individuals have lapsed during the past few years—is always an outstanding virtue. Any organization such as yours formed to promote thrift on a sound basis is to be commended.

Please feel free to count on this office at any time for cooperation in your endeavor. In the meantime, permit me to wish you every success in your undertaking.

Kindest personal regards.

Yours very truly,

MARVIN L. KLINE
Mayor. Minneapolis.

Among the first expected to file in this 1941 campaign are Ike Moore, Tom Carroll, Theodore Allen, Charlie Miller, Warren Grissom and James Slemmons, present Mayor. It is being rumored that an organization plans to draft Dr. J. W. Crump of St. Paul.

In addition to the cash prizes offered to candidates, door prizes of $20, first, and $10, second, will be awarded at the "Inaugural Ball."
