Parnassian Spring.
Description of a May Morning.
(Written by a young Lady)
How gay the fair creation smiles,
Just rising out of night?
The beauteous scene, my ease, beguiles;
And charms my ravish'd sight.
Green flow'ry fields with blooming trees,
Their various hues display.
The wings of each soft whisp'ring breeze,
Ambrosial scents convey.
The lovely chaunters of the air,
Begin their morning song;
With strains melodious greet the ear;
And hail the rising sun.
The rising sun's resplendent beams,
(As from the eastern sky.
They glance along the silver stream,)
Delight the admiring eye.
A thousand charms the prospect yields,
To each attentive mind.
Odours exhaling from the fields,-
The flowers.--the birds,--combin'd.
Regale the senses,-chear the heart,--
Excite the grateful tongue,
In nature's gay, to bear a part;
And tune a morning song.
To Him who bids the radiant sun,
In cloudless glory rise,
Prepar'd with strength, his race to run,
With light to'dorn the skies.
With heat intense. the earth to warm;
And draw her treasures forth;
Secure her fruits. in each cold storm,
Blown from the inclement north.
Mark! how he darts his favours down;
Expands the fragrant flowers;
Exhales their sweets, and in return,
Pours down refreshing showers.
Fair emblem of that sun divine.
Which lights the realms above.
Round Heaven's high arch his glories shine;
And kindle flaming love.
In ev'ry pure immortal breast:
Their powers expanding wide,
Reveal his image deep impress;
The saints, the angels pride.
Praises exhal'd from ev'ry tongue,
Rise to his lofty throne.
Immortal joys in showers descend;
And make his favour known.
When shall he rise on worlds below:
And shed his beams abroad;
Make the whole earth his name to know;
All nations own their God.
When shall he rise (transporting view,)
With lustre all divine,
O'er earth and heaven, created new,
Eternally to shine.
