Washington City, July 1st, 1803.

Among the donations lately made to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, we notice the following:

An analysis of a mineral substance from North America, containing a metal hitherto unknown, by Charles Hatchett, Esq. Presented by the Author.

The mineral substance analyzed by Mr. Hatchett was sent, with various specimens of iron ores, to Sir Hans Sloane, by the late professor Winthrop, of Cambridge. To the new metal, which it contains, Mr. Hatchett has given the name of Columbium. His researches into the properties of this metal, were much limited, he observes, by the smallness of the quantity, which he had to operate upon; but he indulges a hope that more of the ore may soon be procured from the "Massachusetts mines."

The academy, at their last meeting appointed a committee to attend to this subject, who are to ascertain the place, where the ore was found, and to procure further specimens.
