French Priests.—In France there are 78,584
priests, and 108,118 minor ecclesiastics, 86 arch-
bishops, 35,717 cures and 189 vicars-general, belong-
ing to the Roman Catholic church. Of this cleri-
cal army only 35,000 are paid by the government,
the remainder being supported by the church.
The sum thus supplied amounts annually to 218,-
092,600f. The religious communities are divided
into three classes—educational, hospitable, and
contemplative. Of the latter there are 121,141 who
remain in a perpetual state of prayer and medita-
tion. There are 1085 Jesuits, of whom 282 medi-
tate and pray.
