Fighting against God!
Three months ago we carefully laid away the paper from which we copy the following paragraph. It comes in very good play now as the whigs talk of making Gen. Taylor their President. The Journal is conducted by George D. Prentice, the leading whig editor in the West:-
"We have said that this nation is the aggressor. Let us not be accused of hostility to our country, of moral treason, of giving aid and comfort to the enemy. Let us not be told of the maxim, "Our country right or wrong" This, as a maxim of self defence is indisputable—self evident—it is self love expanded into patriotism—self defence expanded into national defence. But, in any other sense, we repudiate all such principle as infamous in ethics or politics. He who will not speak the truth is a liar, and he who dare not is a coward. He who will not or dares not tell his countrymen the truth on questions of the most vital public policy, is a coward or a traitor. And if there is any conduct which constitutes moral treason, it is an attempt to embark or to encourage the country in A WAR AGAINST GOD, as is the case in a war of aggression like THAT IN WHICH WE ARE Now ENGAGED."—Louisville Journal, Jan. 19th 1847.
~ The above is strong language, and the sentiments are worthy of lasting remembrance. The editor charges that the United States are waging "A WAR AGAINST GOD." The hero of this war is General Taylor, —and as a reward for his bold and successful management of this "war against God," some of the federal whig papers say he must be made President of the United States.—Ohio Patriot.
