Shocking Brutality.—On Saturday evening last a married woman, mother of four children, residing at No. 91 Norfolk-street, left her home, probably in a state of intoxication, taking with her the youngest of her children, an infant about ten months old. Some hours after her departure, the cries of a child were heard proceeding from the bottom of a vault in the rear of the premises; assistance was immediately procured, the seats and floor of the privy torn up, and by means of hooks the perishing infant after great exertion was drawn out of its horrid situation. When rescued, it was in the agonies of suffocation; but through the humane and active efforts of the neighbors, it was after some time fully recovered. We are happy to learn that a respectable lady in the vicinity, without children of her own, taking compassion on the helpless infant thus either wantonly or through negligence abandoned by its mother, of whom, up to this morning, nothing has been heard, has adopted the child, with a promise to rear it as her own.—N. Y. Evening Journal.
