FROM NOVA SCOTIA.

Halifax, Sept. 18.—Yesterday morning about 3 o'clock, a fire broke out in Sackville street in the bakery occupied by Shay & Milnam, opposite the Chocolate Manufactory: which extended with such rapidity, that at the dawn of the day 23 houses were destroyed. They were owned as follows: Estates of the late A. Bremmer, 3 houses—Mrs. Liswell. C. R. Fairbanks, Esq. Mr. C. Carver, Mr. M. Bennet, Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Whitecross. Mrs. Clucus, Mr. Callimore, two houses—Mr. Craigen, Mrs. Clunis, 1 each—Mr. Townshend, 2: Mr. Cassidy, Mr. Pollard Mrs. Izat. Mrs. Neilson: 1 pulled down, and 1 materially injured; Jack Eater a blackman 1. Fortunately the weather was moderate, and the devastating element was confined to the block in which it originally appeared.—Some buildings were scorched, and nearly every pane of glass in the front of the residence of S. B. Robie, Esq. was destroyed by the excessive heat of the fire. Of the property burnt only about £1500 were insured, and the calamity has mostly fallen where it will long be severely felt; upon widows and orphan children: upon industrious tradesmen, whose stock of worldly wealth was invested in the tenements they occupied. Happily no lives were lost, although several persons were materially hurt. His Excellency the Lt. Governor was present, encouraging and directing those about him; the Field Officers and the Officers of the Garrison, and the Captains of His Majesty's Ships in the harbor, with the troops and seamen under their command were uncommonly active.
